  • vent free gas burning heater - in an enclosed space (a house). Please explain how this can be safe as it is taking all the O2 out of the enclosed space and replacing it with combustion gases. Outside air exchange in houses these days - - not so much as they are much tighter than years back.

You are correct, with very tight house construction, a vent free appliance is not recommended.  The general rule is that there must be a minimum of 50 cu. ft. of volume per 1,000 BTU's of the appliance, but this doesn't apply to what's considered "unusually tight construction".  If this is the case, adequate combustion air must be added to the space.  In general, we don't recommend vent freee appliances in relatively new construction as they are too "tight" for the needed fresh air.  Thanks for your question!
